Lalande 21258 is also known as Gl 412. It is a nearby binary red dwarf star, sharing a common motion in the sky. The secondary star is a flare star (identified in 1939) also known as WX Ursa Majoris and has been identified as a major source of x-rays. The stars are far enough apart (190 AU) that any planets around star A would be unaffected by the flares from Star B. It would be visible during flare episodes from its nearest neighbor Groombridge 1618. They are members of the Halo population of the galaxy.
