A mosque in Kilwa and the oldest surviving mosque on Africa's east coast. One of the first mosques built without a courtyard (entirely roofed).

The mosque was in its early state and under the new Kilwa Sultinate.


Earlier History[]

  • Great Mosque founded in 10th Century
  • Kilwa Sultinate founded 960 to 1000AD by a Persian prince of Shiraz.

Later History[]

  • Great stage of construction begins in 11th or 12th century.
  • Swahili coast comes under influence of Ajuran Empire.
  • Mosque modified in 13th century by adding side pilistars.
  • In early 14th Century, a southern domed extension was built.
  • Zenith of Kilwa Empire, when it controlled the entire Swahili Coast.
