Mosque in Fez (also called Al-Karaouine) that contains the oldest continuously run university in the world.


1000 AD[]

The school was being revitalized by the Maghrawa at the behest of the Cordoba Caliphate.

Earlier History[]

  • The Idrisid dynasty was founded in 788
  • Fez founded by Idrisid dynasty between 789 and 808 AD as their capitol.
  • University Founded in 859 by Fatima al-Fihri.
  • In 927, the Fatamid Caliphate of Tunisia took over the city. The Idrisid capitol moved to Hajar an Nasar and the Miknasa dynasty was installed.
  • In 974, the Idrisid dynasty ended
  • in 980 the Miknasa were expelled and replaced by the Maghrawa, allies to the Caliphate of Cordoba. Andalusian leader Al Mansar commissions the Maghrawa to revitalize the mosque.

Later History[]

  • In 1070, the Almoravids conquered the city and the two Medinas, Medinat Fez and Al'Aliya were merged.
  • In 1276, Fez Jedid was founded to the west by the Merinids.
